Discerning and Responding to God’s Call
A vocation to the Catholic priesthood is a sacred and divine invitation from God to dedicate one’s life to serving His people. It is not simply a personal ambition or a career choice; it is a call to live a life of service, prayer, and pastoral care. The priest acts as a shepherd, guiding the faithful, a teacher proclaiming the truths of the Gospel, and a minister of the Sacraments, bringing Christ’s presence to the community through Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Marriage, and other sacred rites.
God calls individuals to the priesthood in many ways. Some hear this call through deep personal prayer and reflection, sensing an inner longing to serve the Church. Others are inspired by the witness of faithful priests or religious leaders who exemplify holiness, charity, and dedication to God’s work. Sometimes the call comes through life experiences, encounters with suffering or joy, or through the encouragement of a spiritual mentor or Vocation Director. It is important to understand that a vocation is a personal call from God and is not something that is determined by family expectations, social pressure, or human ambition.
Responding to this vocation requires discernment, which involves careful prayer, reflection, and seeking guidance from experienced spiritual directors. The seminary exists to help candidates explore and understand this call fully. Formation in the seminary nurtures growth in four essential areas: spiritual, human, academic, and pastoral. Spiritual formation helps deepen one’s relationship with God through prayer, sacraments, and a life rooted in faith. Human formation fosters maturity, emotional intelligence, integrity, and compassion. Academic formation provides knowledge of philosophy, theology, scripture, and Church teachings. Pastoral formation prepares men to minister effectively to the faithful, guiding communities with love and wisdom.
Embracing the priesthood also means embracing a life of self-giving, sacrifice, and continual growth in virtue. A priest is called to serve God and others with generosity, humility, and love, putting the needs of the community above personal desires. Those considering this vocation are encouraged to pray deeply, seek spiritual counsel, and remain open to God’s guidance as they discern their calling. The journey to the priesthood is one of transformation, dedication, and joy, as the individual responds to God’s call to make Christ present in the lives of His people.

Seminary formation is a structured and holistic journey that prepares men for the sacred call of priesthood. The process integrates spiritual, human, academic, and pastoral dimensions, helping candidates to grow fully in virtue, knowledge, and pastoral skill.
The formation process differs slightly depending on whether one is pursuing a Diocesan Priesthood or a Religious Order Priesthood:
Initial discernment period where the candidate contacts the Vocation Director, submits an application, and is evaluated spiritually, mentally, and emotionally before admission.
Orientation stage focusing on prayer, community living, and basic formation. For religious orders, this may be called postulancy. It helps discern the call more clearly.
2–3 years of philosophical studies forming intellectual foundations. Courses include logic, metaphysics, ethics, and classical philosophy, developing critical thinking and moral reasoning.
Practical ministry experience, equivalent to Nigeria’s NYSC. Candidates engage in parish work, catechesis, and pastoral care to experience real ministry life.
4–5 years studying Scripture, dogmatic theology, moral theology, sacramental theology, and canon law. Academic and pastoral preparation for priestly ministry.
Final stages of formation including ordination as deacon, followed by priestly ordination. Candidates are fully prepared to celebrate sacraments and serve the Church.
Throughout all stages, discernment continues with the guidance of the Diocese or Religious Order. Seminarians grow spiritually through prayer and sacraments, humanly through discipline and maturity, academically through rigorous studies, and pastorally through practical ministry.
Deepening prayer life, sacramental devotion, and personal relationship with God.
Developing maturity, discipline, interpersonal skills, and moral integrity.
Intellectual preparation in philosophy, theology, and church teachings for ministry.
Practical experience in ministry, parish programs, and community leadership.
Lord Jesus, I thank You for the gift of life and the call to serve You and Your Church. Inspire my heart to hear Your voice clearly amidst the noise of the world. Grant me the grace to discern Your holy will, the courage to follow Your call faithfully, and the generosity to offer my life in love and service to Your people. Strengthen me through prayer, guide me through the sacraments, and lead me by the example of saints who have walked this path before me. Help me to grow in holiness, humility, and compassion, so that I may faithfully shepherd Your flock, teach Your word, and serve with a joyful heart. If You are calling me, Lord, open the doors, remove all doubts, and lead me into the fullness of Your service.
